1. Section Palviflora Koidzumi

This group embraces Acer nipponicum of series Parviflora, Acer distylum of series Distyla and some species of series Caudata, which has the following two species in China.

Series Caudata also has one species Acer spicatum Lamarck in North America.
It is characteristic of this group to have many flowers.

3. Section Macrantha Pax

It is characteristic of this group to have two pairs of bud scale. These maples are deciduous trees whose trunks and branches have white stripes. This group includes not only Acer pensylvanicum from U.S.A. but also those Japanese maples such as Acer crataegifolium, Acer capillipes, Acer rufinerve, Acer micranthum, Acer tschonoskii and the like.

5. Section Negundo Maximowicz

This group includes series Negundo and series Cissifolia. The former includes Acer Negundo from North America, the latter includes Acer Cissifolium from Japan and Acer henryi from China.

6. Section Acer

Besides Series Acer, here are included both Series Monspessulana and series Saccharodendron in this group. It is characteristic of this group to have more than five pairs of bud scales. Most of series Acer are distributed from Europe to West Asia. Besides Acer caesium from China, Series Acer includes Balkan maple, great maple, velvet maple and the like. Series Monspessulana includes Balkan-Ahorn, Montpellier maple and Italian maple. Series Saccharodendron includes sugar maple.
