Section Acer includes series Acer, series Monspessulana, and series Saccharodendron.

It is characteristic of this group to have more than five pairs of bud scales. Most of series Acer are distributed from Europe to West Asia, including Balkan maple, great maple, velvet maple and the like. Series Monspessulana includes Balkan-Ahorn, Montpellier maple and Italian maple. Series Saccharodendron includes sugar maple.
