1. Acer insulare of the Botanical Garden of Osaka Metropolitan University

I visited "Botanical Gardens of Osaka Metropolitan University" on May 5, 2006.

Accordeing to the pamphlet it takes 6 minutes on foot from Keihan-Kisaichi station.

Acer insulare is located at the red circle on the following garden map.

Besides Acer insulare, I enjoyed observing many maples such as
Acer pictum (mono), japonicum, sieboldianum, rufinerve,
nipponicum, pycnanthum, carpinifolium
 and amoenum
as well as many kinds of cultivated species.

At first, I will show you tree shape of Acer insulare.

Next, trunks.

Then, let me show you its branches with leaves and seed.

The seeds I received germinated in the spring of 2007.

Some seeds that sprouted in spring showed red leaves in autumn.

These seedlings were transplanted into pots.

Many 3-lobed and 5-lobed leaves are observed.

The plant enters its third spring.

We can see the transition from the initial 3-lobes to a 5-lobes leaf shape.

Autumn colors from yellow to red in 2011 continued till Jan. 01, 2012.

The image of the leaf shape seen in the botanical garden, that is,
the obscure three-lobed, oval-oval shape is not seen in
these leaves.

This seedling may be considered to be a hybrid or crossbred type.

In the summer of 2012, the tips of the branches are vaguely 3-lobed and oval-shaped leaves,
and mature leaves look like five-lobed leaves.

The oval and egg-shaped leaves of the parent tree of the Botanical Garden seem to be fading.

The autumn color of this seedling is more like red leaves than yellow leaves.

2. Acer insulare which returned home

In December 2000, I received the seed along with the following e-mail from a friend in Europe.

"Seed of Acer insulare from the Japanese Island Amami-ohshima "

The seed germinated in the spring of 2001.

In the spring of 2002, it became a sapling several dozen centimeters tall.

In the spring of 2006, two types were seen, one was greenish and another was brownish.
Many had greenish leaves with vague five lobes.
The next image shows a minority with brownish leaves and five lobes.
