カエデの風景 in 2020、その27

標準種と思われるサトウカエデの観察

庭に何本かサトウカエデの実生苗があります。

昔、アメリカの植物学の学生さんとタネ交換することもありましたが、
その後のタネの購入履歴が見つかりました。

-	時期	購入したタネ
1	1998年２月	Acer saccharum、他計６種
2	2001年７月	不明ですが、計14種
3	2004年１月	Acer grandidentatum、他計12種
4	2006年８月	Acer barbatum、他計８種

実は当初、これがこの種のサトウカエデというように、明確に示すつもりでしたが、
解説書の内容と、苗木の実態を比較すると、そう単純にはいかないので、
今回は、どうもこれらしいという形で、いくつかの情報を提供します。

サトウカエデは、標準タイプのサトウカエデ(Acer saccharum)の他に、
クロカエデ(Acer nigrum)、フロリダメープル(Acer floridanum)、
キャニオンメープル(Acer grandidentatum)、チョークメープル(Acer leucoderme)
などが知られています。

参考書から、以上の代表的な５種類のサトウカエデに関して、
「葉についての記述」のみを一覧表にしました。

2	Acer nigrum Black sugar maple	3-5 lobed leathery, margins irregularly toothed lobes not well defined slightly acuminate base less pronounsed upper side dark green beneath yellow-green with a thick brownish velvety down extending to the petiole. petiole has small stipules.
3	Acer barbatum (Acer floridanum) Southern Sugar Maple	5 lobed, glaucous beneath dark green & smooth above, glaucous grey-green below. rib yellow, with white hairs on the bottom veins petiole yellow-green, reddish on top
4	Acer grandidentatum Canyon maple	shining green above, glaucous beneath, often softly pubescent, often somewhat leathery broader than long, smooth and glossy green on both sides except for some white hairs on the axils and the base of the ribs. petiole yellowish
5	Acer leucoderme Chalk maple	3-5 lobed, margins wavy, lobes almost triangular base almost cordate or truncate upper side fresh green beneath yellow-gray, not glaucous with velvety down petiole red, glabrous
