Funda-in Temple Garden
15-803 Honmachi Higashiyama-ku Kyoto
Funda-in Temple, a subordinate temple of Tofuku-ji Temple, is also known as Sesshu-ji Temple,
and has a karesansui, dry landscape garden, by Sesshu Toyo (in the Muromachi period),
known as a painter and a Zen priest.
It is said that this garden was partly devastated by fires of the Edo period,
and it was restored to the original shape in 1937 by SHIGEMORI Mirei.
In the south garden of Hojo Hall, white sand is laid on this side, and are placed turtle islet and crane islet.
The east yard was made by SHIGEMORI Mirei,
It is said that it represents a range of mountains of Horai around the crane islet.There is a tasteful tea-ceremony room "Tonantei". This round window is wonderful.

At first I will show you the south garden.
Crane islet on the left, and turtle islet on the right
The turtle islet is constructed of the double foundation stone.
The following is the east yard made by SHIGEMORI Mirei.

The north side of the East yard Range of mountains of Horai, and crane islet,
Crane islet and south side of the East yard, a group of rocks around a Rock beside a pine tree
There is a tasteful tea-ceremony room "Tonantei" on the northeast end of the Hojo Hall.

There was a set of tasteful "Chohzubachi", at the west corner of the corridor of the south garden side.
Chohzubachi or Tsukubai is a kind of stone basin or bowl to wash hands for the tea room.
Interestingly there was no maple tree in this garden.
