"My View of Nature" & "Theory of Culture"

March 2002 Hajime Hayashida

Prologue

When we enjoy maple observation, I would like to touch on "view of a thing" or "view on nature", which should be the basis of way of recognition. Above all, I think that nature observation is the basis of understanding of things not only in sciences but also in arts.

Then, let me introduce three literary men to you;
Zhuangzi (Sohji) in China (the Orient), Shakespeare in England (the Occident), and Soseki in Japan.
I call their literatures "3S-literature" by my own style. And I will show you some themes on the dualism which I found in their work.

In the beginning, let me start from this story by Zhuangzi; "You see fish swimming happily", and through which I would like to talk about two polar concepts, that is, logic & intuition, or reason & sensibility.

Finally let me end also with the story by Soji; "Story of Mr. Chaos in the Orient", and through which I would like to talk not only about five senses but also about something exceeding five senses.

I think that these stories would be a guide to recognize the three concepts of "truth, good and beauty".
